What if branding doesn’t work?

Down-the-drain

It’s the question almost every business owner asks me – sometimes out loud, more often between the lines. Branding feels like a leap of faith. You spend the money, you get a nice logo, and then … what?

It’s a very valid concern. And it usually comes from branding done badly: a visual refresh with nothing underneath it. That’s like a lick of paint on a wall that was never prepped. Of course it doesn’t work. It was never going to.

Branding that works is never a gamble. Because it doesn’t start with design. It starts with questions.

Who are you actually for? What do you do that nobody else quite does? Why should someone choose you over the firm down the road? Most businesses have good answers to these. They’ve just never been asked.

Once those answers are clear, everything built on them – the identity, the website, the way you talk about yourselves – stops being decoration and starts being direction.

That’s the difference between branding as a cost and branding as an asset. One fills space. The other does a job.

You don’t need a £50k agency for this. You need someone to ask the right questions and take what makes you you seriously enough to build on it.
